Welcome to bethebreakthrough.org.uk |
What is bethebreakthrough? |
Bethebreakthrough is a set of tools that the Brand and Communications Team have put together to help you help Breakthrough.
We asked people throughout the organisation just what they need to help them in their day to day activities, and identified the following frequently asked questions:
Where can I find Breakthrough logos?
Where can I find photos of our scientists and/or supporters?
Where can I find approved copy?
How can I get a flyer/leaflet/poster designed?
How do I use the Breakthrough brand?
How do I write in the Breakthrough style?
To answer these questions we've created bethebreakthrough, which has four sections. These are:
The Hub, containing photos, copy, information and video
clips
The online designer, where you can create Breakthrough branded artwork and arrange for it to be sent to print
The brand toolkit, which explains how and where to use the Breakthrough logo, and
The writing guide, giving hints and tips on our written style (and some handy grammar rules, too).
All these tools are simple to use, and as bethebreakthrough is web based you don't even need to be able to access the Breakthrough intranet, enabling it to be used by our design agencies and external partners.
If you have any questions, or would like a briefing from the Brand and Communications team on how any of the elements of bethebreakthrough work, just let us know and we'll be happy to make some time.
Regards,
The Brand and Communications team
 The Hub
Registration
If you've not used the Hub before, you'll need to register. Go to bethebreakthrough.org.uk and click on the link to the Hub; you'll be taken to a log in page which also gives you the option to register. Fill in all the fields and select Register and your log in details will be emailed to you. If you need these urgently please email the Hub administrators at bethebreakthrough@breakthrough.org.uk and we'll look out for your registration.
The password you're given will be a random string of letters and numbers - to change it to something more memorable just click on Your Profile in the top right hand corner once you've logged in and follow the instructions.
Navigation
If you know what type of item you're looking for, you can navigate using the categories in the hub, e.g. photographs, approved copy, logos. If you're just looking for general information about a specific topic you can use the search feature. The Hub is smart enough to search not only the data we've attached to each file, but the copy inside Word
documents and PDF files, too, making it easy for you to see every item that is associated with your search term.
Metadata
Metadata is the information associated with each file, eg the file name, description and any notes attached.
Please check the notes of any file you download as they may include important information about the usage of the file.
Please also check the usage rights and access level of files you're interested in. Usage rights will let you know whether the document is for bethebreakthrough.org.uk internal or external use, and the access level will tell you if you need to ask permission before you can download the file.
Your Lightbox
Just to the left hand side of every screen in the Hub you'll see a box marked My Lightbox. This is where you can bookmark files that you find in the Hub that you use frequently or, whilst searching, want to come back to later on. You can share your lightbox with others, or set up extra ones for use on different projects using the Manage Lightboxes tab.
Downloading a file
For most items you don't need permission to download the file straight away, so you'll see a button marked Download next to the thumbnail of the item on the Image Details page. You'll be offered a choice of Quick Download and Advanced Download. If you only need to drop a picture into a Word or PowerPoint file then choose Quick Download, otherwise you need Advanced Download, where you can download the original file, change the file format, crop the file or resize it if needed.
If you need permission to download the file you'll need to add it to your lightbox, along with any other items you want;
you'll see add to my lightbox to the right of the thumbnail. Once you've finished adding files to your lightbox you can access it by selecting View contents in the box headed My Lightbox which always appears on the left of your screen. To the right of the screen in your lightbox you'll see a button marked Request Approval - click this and follow the instructions for your request to be sent to the Hub administrators.
Uploading to the Hub
If you have any suggestions for new categories or files that you think would be a useful addition to the Hub, or if
you'd like to introduce the Hub to your external audience, please talk to the Brand and Communications team and we'll be happy to advise you on how best it can be done.
